Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you get your Beliefs?

The most important basis for what we believe is the Bible, a collection of sacred texts that have unique supernatural power to change people's lives, showing the Creator's plan for each person. While we do have a brief statement of beliefs, we prefer not to "over theologize" but rather allow the community of faith to interpret the Scriptures and apply its lessons to themselves.

What's special about the Journey?

There are plenty of good churches in Flag, we don't claim to be "the only" or "the best." However, in some ways we are unique. While honoring the Bible and classical Christian beliefs, we embrace members who come from a broad variety of theological, social and political perspectives. We encourage people to think for themselves, and encourage open dialogue between members. We try to be genuine and deal with "what is" in life, and create room for people to express that. The most important thing about The Journey is our motto, "Living the Compassion of Christ." We know we can't do that perfectly, since we are all human and flawed, but that is our sincere passion and desire.

He serves as spiritual advisor for The Journey and is a writer with more than two dozen published books. Recently, he has also taught courses on religion at Coconino Community College. He worked as a schoolteacher in LA Unified School District, then went to Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA while serving as Pastor of Faith Church in Downey, California. In 2004, Ken and his wife Marsha sensed God saying, "I have something new for you to do" - which turned out to be a move to Flagstaff and founding of The Journey. Ken and Marsha have been married for 23 wonderful years and have a son Jonathan (21years old ) and daughter Eirene' (18years old ). Both children live in New York. Ken enjoys hiking, working on his vintage Volkswagen bug, watching movies and reading. He has the rare ability to snap his small fingers on both hands?!

Are you affiliated with a group of churches or denomination?

We are a member church of Transformation Ministries. At the same time, we come from a broad variety of spiritual backgrounds and like to think of The Journey in C.S. Lewis' words as "Mere Christianity." Transformation Ministries is a dynamic, caring group of more than a hundred churches, and we appreciate affiliation with them. What's with the Celtic Cross Logo?

The Journey seeks to incorporate the best features of a variety of Christian traditions: the diverse ancestry of our faith. One outstanding Christian tradition of the past was the Celtic church, symbolized by the knotwork cross. Here is a nice brief summary of the ancient Celtic Church: http://www.openheaven.com/library/celtic/traditions.htm
